Highland Views Phase 1 Will Bring Affordable Housing to Newark Seniors
What if an empty lot could become something more?
An 86-unit development is transforming a vacant Newark property into safe, affordable, and fully accessible homes for low-income seniors. It will include units for formerly unhoused individuals, along with on-site social services provided by Catholic Charities.
These types of housing projects are a significant undertaking, and many hands are needed to get them off the ground. In the case of Highland Views, Newark Housing Authority (NHA), MAR Acquisition Group, PNC Real Estate, Citizens Bank, and the New Jersey Housing and Mortgage Finance Agency were all instrumental.
MS&B played an important role throughout the process. Lead by Firm member, Bakari G. Lee, and with critical assistance from Bernadette Chillemi, and Jennifer Harrison, the Firm helped find creative solutions for structuring the deal, leveraging tax credits, and securing investments that would meet the short- and long-term needs of the project.
More than just providing housing, Highland Views Phase 1 will restore hope and foster a sense of community for Newark’s most vulnerable neighbors. It’s a model for how cities can turn underused spaces into opportunity, one home at a time.
