Plainfield Breaks Ground on a Transformative Recreational and Cultural Center
Exciting progress is underway in Plainfield as the City celebrates the groundbreaking of its new Recreational and Cultural Center of Excellence.
Located on the former YMCA site on Watchung Avenue, the 55,000‑square‑foot facility will serve as a dynamic hub for arts, culture, and recreation. The Center will feature an impressive array of amenities, including:
- Competition‑sized swimming pool
- Yoga and dance studios
- Recording and creative spaces
- Classrooms and flexible community rooms
Yet the most transformative component is the addition of 218 affordable housing units, directly addressing Plainfield’s urgent housing needs. By integrating affordable housing with recreational and cultural resources, the project creates a holistic environment that supports residents’ well‑being and fosters a stronger sense of community.
